IN PARLIAMENT
ESTIMATES WRAP UP

Unfortunately I couldn't Chair the Transport and Resources Estimates hearing at the end of last year but it didn't stop me from watching!  I was recently able to put my thoughts on the record in the Parliament.
SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON THE BRUCE HIGHWAY UPGRADE
(DECEPTION BAY - NEW SETTLEMENT RD INTERCHANGE)

I take every opportunity to update the Queensland Parliament on the job-creating, life improving infrastructure projects happening across the Kurwongbah electorate. Sometimes (like this time) it's also important to set the record straight on unfair or uninformed political blame games.
TACKLING YOUTH CRIME

In our first sitting week for 2021 we introduced Youth Justice reforms designed to target hardcore, recidivist youth criminals who put the community at risk.  Under the reforms, courts will get more powers allowing them to:
  • Require Fitting of Electronic monitoring devices (GPS Trackers)
As a condition of bail for recidivist high risk offenders aged 16 and 17.
  • Create a Presumption Against Bail
For youth offenders arrested for committing further serious indictable offences (eg breaking and entering) while on bail.
  • Seek assurances from parents and guardians
That bail conditions will be complied with before an offender is released.
The government is also strengthening existing bail laws to provide further guidance to the courts.

The Youth Justice Act will be amended to include a reference to the community being protected from recidivist youth offenders in the Charter of Youth Justice Principles.  And we're enshrining in legislation the principle that offending whilst on bail is an aggravating circumstance when the court is imposing a sentence.

And to prevent crime in general:
  • Police will be given enhanced powers to use metal detecting wands to target  knife crime on the Gold Coast;
  • Anti-hooning laws will be strengthened to hold the registered owner of a vehicle responsible except where the vehicle is stolen or the owner can identify another driver; and
  • I will be Chairing a Parliamentary inquiry that will examine the implementation of remote engine immobilisers (see below).
There's been a lot of talk recently about better methods of stopping speeding and stolen vehicles.  I look forward to examining this issue as part of the Transport and Resources Parliamentary Committee's inquiry into vehicle safety, standards and technology.  Read our terms of reference and make a submission before the closing date of 15 April 2021, if you want to have a say.
INFRASTRUCTURE
UPDATE
When it comes to the Bruce Highway Interchange upgrade (Deception Bay - New Settlement Rd), I think the pictures are worth a thousand (or 5000) words!
It is AMAZING to witness the different stages of the Dakabin Station Accessibility Upgrade project - especially the way QR manages to keep the station open most of the time!  Last month, I got to see the new footbridge go in and the preparation for pouring concrete in the new carpark.
The Petrie Intersection Upgrade construction contract has been awarded - congratulations to Ertech (Queensland) Pty Ltd!

The project is expected to be completed early next year (weather permitting) with the majority of works to be undertaken at night.  Commuters should expect short term pain in the form of temporary lane closures, reduced speed limits, traffic control and changes to local parking.

Let us all try to be patient this year and focus on the long term gain we'll get from fixing this terrible traffic bottleneck!
IN OTHER NEWS...
Up the Mighty Bears!
On February 5, the first modules of the Bears' new changerooms were craned in to Mathieson Park.  This marked a huge milestone in a project I, along with Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Mick Gillam (Division 8) and the mighty Pine Rivers Bears, have been working hard to make a reality for a couple of years.

You can watch the video on the @pineriversbears facebook page.
Meet local author, M.C. Stephens
I've been getting around to as many P&C meetings and I can and this year, I'm donating a copy of The Eagle and the Beautiful Game, written by our very own local author Matthew Stephens (pictured) to each of our State primary schools.

Hopefully these schools can find a place for this book in their libraries to remind students that creativity, literacy, inspiration, passion, commitment and hard work can take you a long way!

You can read a little bit about M.C. Stephens on the platforms that sell his book such as:  Amazon - https://www.amazon.com.au/Eagle-Beautiful.../dp/178465745X
and Pegasus - https://pegasuspublishers.com/authors/mc-stephens .

I'm sure the Narangba Eagles are all very proud of Matthew too, after he took inspiration partly from his experiences at the club.
The Goldie Cup
And more from the Eagles Nest... It was great to get down to the Goldie Cup on 27 February to support the club's fundraising for Nathan Goldstiver, who suffers from Motor Neurone Disease.  The day was a great success, raising around $6500 to help Goldie and his family.
North Pine Dam Upgrade
Planning for the North Pine Dam Upgrade is now underway.

The upgrade will increase the dam's capacity to withstand extreme floods and it will incorporate the latest advances in dam engineering, building and safety standards.
Locals and dam enthusiasts can visit the website to have your say during the planning process.

You can also keep up to date by subscribing to project newsletters.
The Community Road Safety Grants are now open.  Schools, P&Cs, P&Fs and community groups all welcome to apply.
