Back to School Season
Tuesday 28 January saw the return of State school students across the Kurwongbah electorate.

We had a nice welcome at Petrie State School where we were handing out apples to the students for their first day back.
On the Wednesday we had another great morning greeting students and parents with an apple, this time at Kurwongbah State School.

Thanks to Cr Mick Gillam, Division 8 - Moreton Bay Regional Council, for joining me and handing out pencil packs.
Congratulations to our new student leaders

I was fortunate to be able to attend or send representation (my wonderful staff!) to 2020 student leader celebrations at St Eugene College (11 February) and Burpengary State School (12 February); Petrie, Narangba and Lawnton State Schools (7 Februrary); Jinibara and Kurwongbah State Schools (21 February - pictured at Kurwongbah below).  Well done to all of our newest leaders - I look forward to working with you and your schools throughout the year!

And the best back to school news of all...

Infrastructure Update
Petrie University Campus           (photo from Brisbane Times feature article)
It’s all coming together - very shortly our new University will open at Petrie and as the State Member for the area I couldn’t be more excited. Once again all three levels of government working together have created something for our community. Council procured the site, the State contributed the land for stage 1 and a grant and loan from the Federal Government to the University of the Sunshine Coast have all contributed to this game changing project. Well done to all and welcome to USC Petrie's first cohort!

The designs are in for the Bruce Highway Interchange (above) and Petrie Roundabout / Intersection (below) projects!  I have been working for a number of years to get transport outcomes - like these projects - for the people of Kurwongbah and it is very rewarding to see them finally come to fruition.  Check out the speech I delivered about transport infrastructure in Parliament and visit www.shaneking.net.au to follow progress on these projects and more.

Safety improvements for Vores Rd - Dayboro Road turn off
In other good news, I have just announced funding for a dedicated right-turn lane from Dayboro Road into Vores Road at Whiteside. With Lake Kurwongbah and quarries just around the corner, local families and workers often share this stretch of Dayboro Road with heavy vehicles. That is why I fought for extra funding to build on minor road safety improvements that were made last year. I look forward to seeing the new project design soon.
Supporting our Sporting Clubs

One of the goals I want to kick as State Member is getting more local kids playing sport.  Sporting clubs bring so many benefits to our community: low cost health and fitness opportunities; social networking and support for families; and our economy benefits when kids are physically and mentally healthier and engaged in the community.

That's why I am a proud sponsor of local sporting clubs, including:

  • Burpengary Brumbies Cricket Club
  • Burpengary Jets Junior Rugby League
  • Caboolture Sports Football Club
  • Moreton Bay Lions AFL Sports Club (pictured below with Cr Peter Flannery, Chair, Barry Allen & Hon. Mark Ryan MP)
  • Narangba Crows Junior AFL
  • Narangba Eagles Football Club
  • Narangba Rangers Rugby League
  • Narangba Valley Novas Netball Club
  • Pine Rivers Bears Junior Rugby League
If your club has a request for sponsorship, please contact my office on 3448 9100 or e-mail kurwongbah@parliament.qld.gov.au .

I'm always on the look out for more government funding to help local clubs and I recently announced Active Club grants up to $2000 each for:

  • Burpengary Jets Netball Club Inc
  • Moreton Bay Lions
  • Narangba Crows
  • Narangba Demons Baseball Club Inc
  • Narangba Rangers
  • Pine Rivers Bears Junior Rugby League
  • Pine Rivers Golf Club Inc
  • Pine Rivers Pony Club Inc
And $30,000 in Gambling Community Benefit Funding for the Cartmill Centre at Burpengary, supporting horse riders with disabilities in their sport.
Don't forget to check your eligibility for a FairPlay voucher.
Parents, carers or guardians can apply for a voucher valued up to $150 for their child, which can be used towards sport and active recreation membership, registration or participation fees with registered activity providers.

Here's to our fireys!

On 11 January, I joined Mark Ryan MP to wish the latest crew of brave rural firefighters all the best as they departed from Caboolture.  My wife Angie (pictured) has been fighting fires for around twenty years and it’s always hard to see her and the crew go into dangerous situations, but to say I’m a bit proud of her is an understatement!  Check out my tribute to volunteer firefighters in Parliament.

Queensland’s aerial response to bushfires will soon be boosted with State Government funding secured for a long-term Large Air Tanker (LAT).

The Premier wrote to the Prime Minister asking for support for one of these - which sadly fell on deaf ears.  So we have had to go it alone and there's no doubt the acquisition of this giant, 15,000-litre aircraft will enhance our ability to fight bushfires in Queensland.
